Converse Thunderbolt & Equinox Arthur Lydiard vintage sneaker ad

Converse "The Art of Running" 1984 Arthur Lydiard Thunderbolt and Equinox vintage sneaker ad. Another popular theme of these old 80s running shoe ads is the “track coach sponsorship.” After the success of Nike and Bill Bowerman there was a long line of track coach endorsers that came out to promote different brands and lines of running shoes.

Arthur Lydiard was well known and prior to these runners with Converse he sponsored a pair of sneakers by the EB Brütting company in Germany called the Lydiard EB Brütting Road Runner. Lydiard also taught Bill Bowerman how to jog. After that he designed these Thunderbolt and Equinox shoes for Converse. Converse re-issued the Thunderbolt and these sneakers have a really cool, unique style to them.

THE ART OF RUNNING
Arthur Lydiard, the world's greatest distance coach and designer of the new Converse Lydiard Equinox and Lydiard Thunderbolt.
“As a distance coach, I don't base my running methods solely on strength. Running's a science. That's why I chose to work with Converse. Converse is dedicated to biomechanical research. And together we've developed innovative design features that provide major benefits to the serious runner. We built the new Equinox' and Thunderbolt- on my own last... a curved, contoured and balanced last...the first of its kind. Special features include the extremely lightweight, yet durable Indy 500 outsole. A removable conformal footbed. And a molded mid-sole that keeps its resilience mile after mile. We also designed the Equinox"' in widths.

The results? Shoes that fit your foot and at the same time are lightweight and flexible. Three musts for any shoe you're going a long distance on. I strongly recommend serious runners train in the new Converse Lydiard Equinox and race in the Lydiard Thunderbolt. Like I tell all my runners, being good isn't luck. It's a science. Resign yourself to that and you'll go far"

Tred2 "Double D" vintage sneaker ad

Tred 2 "Double D" Vintage sneaker print ad. Another cool old sneaker brand that was made in the USA back in the day.

Tred 2 "Double D" 70s vintage sneaker ad @ The Deffest

DOUBLE D:
THE ONE SHOE THAT DELIVERS THE TWO THINGS YOUR FOOT NEEDS MOST.

Rearfoot stability and forefoot cushion. That's hard to get in one shoe. That's why TRED 2 invented some-thing called the Double Durometer midsole. A durometer is a measure of firmness or softness of a material. We made the Double with two different ones because your foot wants it that way. When it hits, your rear-foot needs a thicker cushion for shock absorption and then a firmer density midsole for stability and prevention of over-pronation. Your fore-foot needs a softer midsole for easy flex and cushion on toe-off. With the TRED 2 Double D'," your foot doesn't have to com-promise.

Your heel gets a durometer of 35. Your forefoot gets one of 30. Your eye will see the difference in color and your foot will feel it in comfort. Combine Double D"with a light nylon upper reinforced with suede for durability. A unique flex tip for increased forward mobility. And a two-level honeycomb outer sole for superior traction and longer wear. It all adds up to only 297 grams (size 9). The TRED 2 Double D. Because your foot wants the best of two shoes when it can only wear one.

Stride Rite "Rock Band" vintage sneaker commercial from 1983

Here's a pretty good Stride Rite Zips vintage sneaker "rock band" commerical from '83. The guitarist is no Eddie Van Halen or Tony Iommi but I like that they were prepping the kids for a life of heavy metal. Well done Stride Rite! 🤘🎸🤘

Brooks 1979 Super Villanova vintage sneaker ad

Here’s a 1979 Brooks vintage sneaker advertisement for the Vantage and Super Villanova model running shoes. This original print advertisement is available at our Rewind Running web store.

Ad info is below:

10% better shock absorption

2.1 Ounces lighter.

Double the wear.

WHY WE'VE DECIDED TO STOP MAKING SIX OF OUR MOST POPULAR RUNNING SHOES.

There's an old racing strategy that says: Don't look over your shoulder when you're in the lead. Well, we've taken that maxim to heart. And now that we've improved six of our most popular shoes, it just doesn't make sense to sell the origi-nals any more.

DOUBLE THE WEAR.

We've changed the rubber in our Racing Stud Sole to a new com-pound called Brooks B-22, and increased the stud length. In tests at a leading independent laboratory, our new B-22 Sole outperformed our original sole by 100%, which means you should get twice as many miles from our new and improved Vantage, Vantage Supreme and Super Villanova.

2.1 OUNCES LIGHTER.

The midsole material is new, too. It's called My/T/Lite®Foam. And in our Vantage, for example, it shaves off more than two ounces of weight. That's almost 20% less to carry. So whether you're racing or just out for your daily training run, the net weight savings is phenomenal. (More than 2 1/2 tons for the marathon, for instance.)

10% BETTER SHOCK ABSORPTION.

Our new midsole also increased shock absorption an amazing 10%. No mean feat when you consider that these shoes are already rated among the best in the world in absorbing road shock.

WHAT WE DIDN'T CHANGE.

You'll be pleased to know that we haven't changed the Brooks Sensa-tion, that tremendously satisfying feeling you get from running in Brooks shoes. Or any of our sensational Brooks features. The Varus Wedge* to control pronation. The Custom Contour Insole* for custom fit. The triple-reinforced heel strike area for longer sole wear. We haven't changed the Brooks Sensation. We've just made it more sensational.
